In parallel, it is also important to recognize and promote the major steps taken by national and regional stakeholders including governments, the private sector, citizens, and NGOs in meeting the global commitments.    The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan), the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science of the University of Tokyo (IR3S, Japan), the Udayana University (UNUD, Indonesia), the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB, Indonesia), and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT, Thailand) jointly held the “2nd International Forum on Sustainable Future in Asia” from January 26 to January 28, 2017 at Udayana University in Denpasar, Indonesia. This international forum was held in order to contribute to achieve the goals of the sustainable societies with approximately 150 participants including the speakers. This year’s forum has focused on five key themes: environmental monitoring; environmental risks and health; waste management and recycling; biodiversity; synergizing adaptation and mitigation actions. At the end of the final session, NIES, IR3S, and AIT presented the joint statement for further research collaboration towards taking actions to tackle climate change. Four components consist this joint statement: 1. to establish a shared knowledge platform consisting of various range of research information and solutions for climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation; 2. to develop integrated assessment models for addressing climate change vulnerability of countries and cities in the Asia-Pacific region; 3. to establish a national climate change adaptation research network contributing to national development in the region; 4. to establish a systematic and organized capacity-building scheme in the climate change area targeting decision makers on climate change policies within the region. This joint statement will contribute to achieve the “Japan’s Assistance Initiatives to Address Climate Change” announced by Minister Yamamoto (Ministry of the Environment, Japan) during COP22 in 2016. Through the forum, we found there are many opportunities where science can fill knowledge gaps, propose solutions, and connect different players toward the realization of sustainable societies. However, it is important to recognize that science alone cannot solve the problem, and co-creation and mutual learning are needed among scientists and partners in the society based on understanding and accepting diverse life and culture. The abovementioned research institutions will continuously seek solutions for sustainable future in Asia.
