My family and my own wanderings took me across various countries, where I pondered the absence of wildlife I knew from books, finally returning to Brazil and witnessing the desolation of our Atlantic Forest with new eyes. During my undergraduate years in Rio de Janeiro, amidst an empty ecoregion for which few parts remain, I learned that the extinction of megafauna and its lingering impacts on the planet were mainly caused by human activity during the Pleistocene. It was during my doctoral research in South Africa that I encountered a remarkable abundance of megafauna, once again shaped by human actions, but this time to sustain their existence through management. As nearly all the Earth is altered in some way by people, I strive to consider these impacts when studying biodiversity to avoid making grave misinterpretations of current patterns. I am also very interested in the concept of rewilding, or the reintroduction of megafauna to areas they have been extirpated from to restore lost ecosystem functions. Recently, I relocated from South Africa to study these topics in the fascinatingly diverse archipelago of Japan. Career From 2009 to 2013, I pursued my undergraduate studies at Rio de Janeiro’s Federal University in Brazil, focusing on various reintroduction and species distribution modeling projects. Graduating with a degree in biology and a major in ecology, I then transitioned to the borders of Pantanal, where I completed my MSc in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation from 2014 to 2015. During this time, I conducted research on anaconda management and obtained a degree in Environmental Law. Simultaneously, I served as a substitute professor at Mato Grosso’s Federal University. In 2016, I began my PhD fieldwork in the Amazon Forest, studying harpy eagles until 2020. Throughout this period, I pursued a PhD in Ecological Sciences at KwaZulu-Natal University in South Africa, concurrently working as a researcher at The Peregrine Fund and as a substitute professor at Mato Grosso’s State University. Additionally, I acted as a consultant to the tourism industry and documentary productions, utilizing statistics and management techniques to enhance wildlife sighting rates. I briefly undertook a senior postdoctoral position at South Africa’s North West University before settling in Japan. Selected Publications Miranda, E. B., Peres, C. A., Carvalho-Rocha, V., Miguel, B. Journal of Zoology, 301(4), 301-309. Activities in Academic Societies I am a member of the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission, where I work in the Snake Specialist Group. Here, I spearheaded the formation of a conservation subgroup to protect the critically endangered boa species Corallus cropani, rediscovered after a 60-year hiatus thanks to a grant I secured. Teaching I have taught many undergraduate biology courses during my time as a substitute professor in Brazil, including courses on conservation biology, population and ecosystem ecology, landscape ecology, environmental planning and management, wildlife management, protected area planning, and aquaculture. In addition to teaching university students, I have taught veterinarians, forest engineers, agronomists, and biologists. Recent Activities Currently, I serve as assistant professor in the Macroecology Lab. Dr. Kass and I are in the midst of planning new and ambitious research directions, and I have been working closely with the students in our lab on their research projects. Moreover, I continue to collaborate with colleagues from South Africa's Protected Area Research Group and Brazil's Translocation Conservation Network, alongside specialists in anacondas, jaguars, and harpy eagles. Message to Students I am eager to mentor individuals interested in exploring the distribution, decline, and extinction of large predators in Japan (particularly tigers, leopards, and wolves), but also those who are interested in other large vertebrates in Japan. I am currently deeply interested in the historical and future habitats of the Yangtze alligator (ヨウスコウアリゲーター), Japanese giant salamander (オオサンショウオウ), Blakiston's fish owl (シマフクロウ), and Mountain hawk-eagle (クマタカ). I expect my students to cultivate consistent reading habits, embrace programming without fear, and hold firm to the belief that science can be pursued with joy and passion.
